ABRIDGE JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP OFFER

A new era of Junior Golf membership is coming to Abridge Golf Club.

Parents….. Are you currently a full member of our club? Did you know your child is entitled to a totally FREE junior membership if they are under the age of sixteen?

All of our junior members are entitled to play at any time during the week and after 1:00 p.m at the weekend. Unrestricted play at the weekends is available to junior members holding a handicap of 10 or below.

Did you also know that you can introduce your child to golf, or even hone the skills they already have with lessons from our dedicated junior P.G.A qualified professional and multi event winning coach Jack Winer on a Saturday morning for only £6!! Your child can also attend one of our summer camps where they can learn in the morning and then take their new found skills out onto the course in the afternoon for an exciting nine or eighteen hole competition. For those children with a competitive streak is the chance to fight for a place in our Youth Shield team to test their skills against other junior golfers either home or away in fixtures within the county of Essex.

For the next 20 junior members under sixteen years of age who join us at Abridge we have released a full membership for only £100* with £50 of the fee being placed onto a levy card to use for food and drinks at the club.

Regular dedicated junior competitions during the holidays and weekends over the summer will get them away from the games console and out of the house and will take place with the help of our junior organiser. Any junior member with a handicap of 24 or below will also be entitled to play in adult medal (if accompanied by at least one adult member) and knockout competitions. If you hold a handicap of 10 or below you may compete for the much coveted Club Championship. We also look forward to welcoming some of the successful juniors to take a place in our Leslie F Wood and Thornton Cup teams.

Abridge is a friendly, vibrant golf club with a fantastic course that has been on The Open Qualifying rota and has superb practise facilities including a 300 yard driving range, nine hole putting green, small chipping green and a dedicated short game area to the left of our eighth hole.

Abridge are extremely proud to promote and support junior golf and look forward to welcoming young golfers of all abilities into our club.

Abridge Golf Club V Woodford Golf Club Norman Plumb match report

This result was a strong win for Abridge. With many players unavailable for selection due to a range of commitments, it was down to the depth of talent within the club. It is with great pride to know that we can call upon players who can represent the club and themselves with aplomb. The away side had a tricky test at Woodford Golf Club, with its quirks and hard running fairways.

We were up to the exacting challenge!. An “away win” combined with a must have “home win” provides the perfect recipe for success. Confident and reliable home course players set a solid foundation with 2-1 win and the away group yielded a further 2-1 win, giving us a resolute 4-2 overall result.

The Captain was so pleased with the team’s performance it was “drinks all-round” at both venues. A Much appreciated gesture by the boys. Thanks Skipper!!

Coming Together Nicely

Good Morning all it’s a beautiful day at Abridge Golf Club. Have a click on the video below to see how we are ‘turning up’ the Course .

I hope you enjoyed that. We are working hard to move things up and up in quality and presentation.

Drone footage 9th May 2019

The weather is set fair for this week with temperatures rising and so this morning the greens are getting some air, verti-cutting followed by a cut, feed and topdress. This is similar to what we did to them a couple of weeks ago and hopefully we will not interfere too much with your enjoyment the next couple of days.

Everything is starting to grow nicely now and, like every year, the Rough has really thickened . We are cutting it hopefully twice this week ! but please be patient. All areas will get cut this week but have a few staff issues. I have two off sick and one on holiday so its going to be a bit of a struggle but we will do our best.

We will hopefully this week be getting the divot bins out again for you to help us with divoting the fairways as you play. It really makes a difference if you can take bag and fill a few divots in as you go.

The new tanks for the Irrigation should all be connected by the end of May and the Newt catching is progressing and on schedule.

The 4th green is doing great and we intend to open this as planned by the end of May.

The 13th bunkers are all now in play I hope you enjoy playing out of them !!

Finally my staff and I wish the Captain well with his away day this week.

Tactical Win in Norman Plumb Trophy against Thorndon Park

This event is often down to tactical acumen of HOME and AWAY players. The favoured option is to try and ensure a home win and grab something away. This worked well in our victory over Thorndon Park in Round 1 of this Essex GU event.

The home side battled hard against determined visitors who would not give up. This was clear as all games went to at least the 16th. The amazing putting of Steve Tall certainly deflated the opposition with countless saves and winning puts. Dogged performances by all gave us a 2-1 lead. The away team grafted hard for their points. Steve Marshall and Menashi Cohen gaining the invaluable ‘away win’ with the steady pairing of Adam Nossek/Adam Durrant gaining a ‘match securing’ half point.

Norman Plum Round 1 result

The overall result of 3½ to 2½ reflected excellent work from all players. Captain David Phillips was rightly proud of the team’s excellent result. We now head to Round 2 with a match up v Woodford.

IT’S AIR TIME

Good morning all hope you are enjoying the Golf course. Easter was amazing weekend for weather but temperatures have dropped back and rather stunted things growing.

As I put on Teamup last week we will be doing some work on the greens this week. Firstly they will get some vital aeration, click on the link below .

Aeration on Abridge greens

Hope you enjoyed that. After this we will verti-cut the greens which will help cut some of the longer grasses that are laying down.

A cut , an iron and a nice feed to the greens finally followed by a top dressing and our greens work will be done.

Hopefully all by Tuesday, weather permitting. Please be patient with us while we do this essential work. We cannot cut the greens for a couple of days after so they may be a little slow until the weekend.

On the subject of Air, Marc ( our House Manager ) and myself were asked to feature on a radio show all about Abridge Village and surrounding areas, namely the Golf Club. It’s a really interesting programme to listen to . It’s a 3 hour listen and we are approximately on about 2 hours 10 minutes into the programme. If you want to listen click on the link below, hope you enjoy it.

Hopefully you will have noticed a lot of seed ‘popping’ on the areas we have overseeded, especially the fairways 11,12,13, and 14.

You may have noticed that we top dressed the Tees last week and there was a slight ‘smell’ to the soil we used to do this? This is because we mixed our normal sand/soil dressing mix with something called Humus.

Humus

Humus is the organic material in soil. Humus is not a form of soil, rather it is the broken down composted remains of leaves, grass, and other organic matter contained within the soil. Humus is highly nutritious and rich in minerals and microbes vital for healthy plant growth. Humus also is able to hold 80-90 per cent of its own weight in moisture.

It’s a brilliant thing to use but does have a bit of an odour. It helps to stimulate growth. In fact these two below have been washing there hair in it , let’s hope it works on humans too!

green keepers at abridge
Don’t think Humus will work on these two, somethings are beyond help !!
Though Paul’s beard seems to be coming on well !

Thank you to all of you for keeping out of the Irrigation lake area while we continue to trap and move the wildlife. We have approximately 25-30 more days of doing this.

Now that we have dried out to allow Buggy’s and Trolley’s on we will no longer be updating the course condition link every day. We will now do this on a weekly basis, ideally on a Friday, letting you know what is going on the Golf Course the coming week.

Finally a 4th green update. It’s coming back nicely but we need to give it a few more weeks to let the new seed establish. PLEASE KEEP OFF it to let nature do what nature does best ….repair and recovery !

That’s it for this update . Regards Geoff
