May 2019

We are very much into the busy cutting season now and also lots of Golf days and corporate Golf days. Working around all these Golf events trying to keep every surface at its best can be difficult and sometimes we have to do things at certain times for the good of the Course that make us not the most popular people ! I can assure you everything we do do is for the benefit of your Golf Course !

The hard work by the greenstaff and new irrigation install on the 11th fairway has brought it back a treat !

Over the last couple of weeks all surfaces have been granular ‘fed’ and watered in, which is why last weekend the ball was not running too far on fairways. These past few days all surfaces have also been lowered to ‘summer heights’ so all surfaces will start to roll a bit quicker and further

Our 8th fairway

The exception to this will be the 4th Green.

How the 4th Green looked in March 2019

I am very pleased to announce that the 4th will be back in play from today. Its come back really well, its not perfect but good enough to re-open. What you need to know is that we have not been able to carry out normal routine work whilst waiting for seed to germinate on the green. Please be aware it will putt slower than the rest of the greens

How the 4th Green looks now

Giving you heads up on next weeks work, we will be starting to prepare for your Annual Club Championships on the 29th/30th June , which I hope you are all signing up for?. I also am very very proud to announce we have been asked to hold the Regional Qualifier of the John Deere World Championships. It’s a World Tournament held every few years with the winning top two teams going to the final in September which will be held this year at Gleneagles.

The work next week will involve the Greens getting a nice bit of air, a verti-cut, a feed, a roll and a topdress to smooth the surfaces out. Because of the corporate commitments this work will be carried out on Wednesday and Thursday and means that the greens maybe a little slower next weekend, but will be lovely and true. From then we start speeding things up bit by bit and taking the rest of the Course up another notch.

Part installation of our new ‘Bad boy’ Pumps

Finally by the end of next week we will have our new efficient Irrigation pumps working and controlling our new system. I hope you are all seeing the massive benefits its bringing to our Course

That’s it from me for now. Thank you for all your support

Enjoy your Course, Enjoy your Club. Remember………. It’s yours!

Mardyke Valley Golf Club V Abridge Golf Club, Match report

This was a match of some significance after our last outing at Crondon Park. It was vital that we gained a result to provide any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. In a tightly fought encounter, the matches retained interest late into their rounds. The engagement from our players was obvious. It is clear to see that with each round players are more streetwise and understanding of the job required. Sometimes playing well is not the answer! Playing winning golf when you’re not, that is the challenge!

The first sign of what was to come arrived with an uncertain ½ point from Lewis Diamant, who had been down all of the match, seizing a chance on that last hole to grab a half. Darren May and ‘Captain Dave’ also returned strong wins and points for the side.

The focus moved to the pairs, interest was clear by the number of players and officials watching! This group delivered what was hoped from them displaying true battling qualities and bringing home invaluable and match winning points from all 3 games.

The next and final round of games sees the team off to Benton Hall. We will access the position and establish what we need to achieve to progress out of the group stage. In the meantime, may we all bask in the success achieved today and reflect on a job well done!

A new era of Junior Golf membership is coming to Abridge Golf Club.

Parents….. Are you currently a full member of our club? Did you know your child is entitled to a totally FREE junior membership if they are under the age of sixteen?

All of our junior members are entitled to play at any time during the week and after 1:00 p.m at the weekend. Unrestricted play at the weekends is available to junior members holding a handicap of 10 or below.

Did you also know that you can introduce your child to golf, or even hone the skills they already have with lessons from our dedicated junior P.G.A qualified professional and multi event winning coach Jack Winer on a Saturday morning for only £6!! Your child can also attend one of our summer camps where they can learn in the morning and then take their new found skills out onto the course in the afternoon for an exciting nine or eighteen hole competition. For those children with a competitive streak is the chance to fight for a place in our Youth Shield team to test their skills against other junior golfers either home or away in fixtures within the county of Essex.

For the next 20 junior members under sixteen years of age who join us at Abridge we have released a full membership for only £100* with £50 of the fee being placed onto a levy card to use for food and drinks at the club.

Regular dedicated junior competitions during the holidays and weekends over the summer will get them away from the games console and out of the house and will take place with the help of our junior organiser. Any junior member with a handicap of 24 or below will also be entitled to play in adult medal (if accompanied by at least one adult member) and knockout competitions. If you hold a handicap of 10 or below you may compete for the much coveted Club Championship. We also look forward to welcoming some of the successful juniors to take a place in our Leslie F Wood and Thornton Cup teams.

Abridge is a friendly, vibrant golf club with a fantastic course that has been on The Open Qualifying rota and has superb practise facilities including a 300 yard driving range, nine hole putting green, small chipping green and a dedicated short game area to the left of our eighth hole.

Abridge are extremely proud to promote and support junior golf and look forward to welcoming young golfers of all abilities into our club.

Abridge Golf Club V Woodford Golf Club Norman Plumb match report

This result was a strong win for Abridge. With many players unavailable for selection due to a range of commitments, it was down to the depth of talent within the club. It is with great pride to know that we can call upon players who can represent the club and themselves with aplomb. The away side had a tricky test at Woodford Golf Club, with its quirks and hard running fairways.

We were up to the exacting challenge!. An “away win” combined with a must have “home win” provides the perfect recipe for success. Confident and reliable home course players set a solid foundation with 2-1 win and the away group yielded a further 2-1 win, giving us a resolute 4-2 overall result.

The Captain was so pleased with the team’s performance it was “drinks all-round” at both venues. A Much appreciated gesture by the boys. Thanks Skipper!!

Coming Together Nicely

Good Morning all it’s a beautiful day at Abridge Golf Club. Have a click on the video below to see how we are ‘turning up’ the Course .

I hope you enjoyed that. We are working hard to move things up and up in quality and presentation.

Drone footage 9th May 2019

The weather is set fair for this week with temperatures rising and so this morning the greens are getting some air, verti-cutting followed by a cut, feed and topdress. This is similar to what we did to them a couple of weeks ago and hopefully we will not interfere too much with your enjoyment the next couple of days.

Everything is starting to grow nicely now and, like every year, the Rough has really thickened . We are cutting it hopefully twice this week ! but please be patient. All areas will get cut this week but have a few staff issues. I have two off sick and one on holiday so its going to be a bit of a struggle but we will do our best.

We will hopefully this week be getting the divot bins out again for you to help us with divoting the fairways as you play. It really makes a difference if you can take bag and fill a few divots in as you go.

The new tanks for the Irrigation should all be connected by the end of May and the Newt catching is progressing and on schedule.

The 4th green is doing great and we intend to open this as planned by the end of May.

The 13th bunkers are all now in play I hope you enjoy playing out of them !!

Finally my staff and I wish the Captain well with his away day this week.
