Golf Principles are delighted to have their new base at Abridge Golf Club

Golf Principles, headed by Jason MacNiven, are based in their state of the art indoor custom fitting studio at Abridge. The club also has excellent outdoor practice facilities so clients will receive both ‘data + visual’ feedback.

The team at golf principles will be able to show you that a good set of clubs and a powerful swing are not enough for you to play your best golf.

The improved results come from having the additional benefits of the perfect combination of shaft, loft and flex working together in harmony with your natural swing.

Then and only then, can you start to play golf to your full capability.

To have professionally-fitted clubs is essential to getting the most out of your game and our PGA-qualified staff do this by reading your ‘signature’ swing. We coach using Trackman to provide instant feedback, link the numbers and help you enhance the mechanics of your swing.

We also offer a complete repair service for all your golf clubs. This could be a quick re-grip or shaft replacement to a complete MOT including loft & lie adjustment.

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to have your clubs correctly custom fitted. The video below demonstrates how having the wrong lie angle effects club face direction at impact (known as Face Plane Tilt). Club face is the biggest contributor to the direction of the golf ball.

Come and see any of our Golf Principles Team to check yours !

Frustrating Frosts to Fantastic Greens

It can be very frustrating when you turn up for a round of golf at one of your favourite top quality courses like Abridge Golf Club and there is a frost and the Course Manager Geoff Smith will only let you play to temporary Greens!

So why do I do it ? Is it to be awkward, is it I don’t want to allow you to use the main Greens because I cannot be bothered to set them up ? Or I just like to annoy Golfers!

Some of you may know the reasons why, but for those that don’t please click on the video link and watch and learn!

Its a video from the US but the principles and reasons for protecting our Greens from frost and golfers are exactly the same

So having now watched the above video, I hope you understand why the top Courses such as Abridge Golf Course protect their Greens when we have frosts.

Although it’s frustrating for you as the Golfer on these frost days it enables me to write articles later in the year that start with the heading ‘ FANTASTIC GREENS!’

Golf Drills and Tips from Jack Winer our resident PGA Professional at Abridge.

Early Extension

Do you struggle with inconsistencies in your ball striking that produces unexpected bad shots including pushes, slices and hooks ?

Poor contacted golf shots like these may be caused by an early extension of the body. This occurs when there is a forward movement of the hips and lower body towards the golf ball at the start of the downswing.  As a result the plane gets underneath us causing the club and arms to get stuck behind the body.

Here is a simple drill that can be easily practiced on the range.

You should start the drill by taking your normal set up with the back of your ‘derriere’ resting against your golf bag.

From this position take the club to the top of the back swing whilst ensuring you stay in contact with bag.

On the downswing try and feel like you are going to maintain that contact or even push back slightly as if you are trying to push the bag over. This subtle feeling will greatly assist the ability to stop that early extension.

Jack qualified as a PGA professional in 2018 and finished the year by competing in the PGA Play-Offs at Antalya Golf Club on the PGA Sultan course in Turkey. He will be regularly providing his tips and drills over the coming months to help all levels of golfers

Geoff Smiths’ course updates – The Irrigation Lake

Each month Geoff Smith, the course manager at Abridge, will provide an update of the schedule of works currently being undertaken to improve the course at Abridge and ensure it remains one of the ‘must play’ top golf courses in Essex.

Happy new year to you all from myself and the greenkeeping team at Abridge. We have been planning the ‘new dawn at Abridge’ for some time and I can ensure you that there are really exciting times ahead on the golf course in 2019. With so much going on, my green keeping team are all really looking forward to enhancing the playing experience for all of our members and visitors in the coming year.

Irrigation Lake.

In 2018 the golf club invested heavily in a new irrigation system at Abridge. We were able to water and maintain almost all of the fairways during one of the hottest summers on record.  As part of the decision making process it was agreed to install an irrigation lake so we can store and then supply our own water.

If you have played the golf course in the last 2 weeks then you will know that these works have started so I thought that you may appreciate a full schedule of programmed works! It’s not set in stone as many factors can lead to change. Here is some video footage of what we are doing at the moment…

Abridge Golf Club commence work on the new irrigation lake

1. The first job is to clear the area of trees adhering to the plans approved; this will take approximately 4-6 weeks.

2. We then have to put in place some temporary protection and monitoring for wildlife that may or may not be there for a period of time and then the plan is to start the main construction of the lake.

3, Once completed we are then in the hands of the weather to start filling it and then at some stage we will be able to stop being totally reliant on expensive mains water to irrigate our Golf course. This makes us more environmentally sustainable and responsible as a Golf Course and user of water.

4. Then when construction is finished and suitable conditions replacement tree planting and landscaping will take place.

As the saying goes ‘Rome was not built in a day!’ and we know there is a lot of work to be done but my staff and I are all very keen to get it done and we also have the passion and desire to take the condition of the  course to the next level. This work takes time, investment, patience with some disruption and inconvenience that will require understanding and compassion from you, the Golfer and a little bit of luck with regards to the weather!

That’s it for now but over the coming months I will update you further on our progress to include

  1. Expansion of the new Irrigation system to other parts of the Golf Course.
  2. Re constructing some bunkers, starting with the 13th greenside.
  3. Drainage of the 18th Green and other areas.
  4. Completion of the buggy path around the back 9 holes giving us a buggy path all around the course.

Happy golfing at Abridge and here’s to a great 2019.

New Rules for 2019 and the truth about provisional balls!

Hope you all had a great Christmas break.

Did I tell you how I love to confuse shop assistants by asking “Do you have this in extra medium”?

Or when a waiter asks what water I would like, I say “Two parts H, one part O please”!

Or have you been into your favourite golf store and asked for a dozen provisional balls? Which brings me onto the subject I wanted to talk about this week…

As you should know, the revised rules of Golf come into effect on 1 January 2019. See the excellent video on the subject which you can link to from the top of this post or by clicking here. One of the much discussed changes relates to “balls lost or out of bounds”.

  • Balls Lost or Out of Bounds: Alternative to Stroke and Distance:  A new Local Rule will now be available in January 2019, permitting committees to allow golfers the option to drop the ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost or out of bounds (including the nearest fairway area), under a two-stroke penalty. It addresses concerns raised at the club level about the negative impact on pace of play when a player is required to go back under stroke and distance. The Local Rule is not intended for higher levels of play, such as professional or elite level competitions. (Key change:  this is a new addition to support pace of play)

Firstly, I can confirm that it has been decided NOT to implement this as a local rule at Abridge Golf Club as far as all competitions are concerned. However, in a friendly 4-ball, you could choose to follow this rule if agreed at the start by all players.

Of course this rule change would not be  necessary if golfers used the option to hit a “provisional ball” if they suspect their first ball may be lost or out of bounds.

Which brings me back to provisional balls. I certainly don’t profess to be a rules expert myself, but it certainly surprises me the number of golfers that don’t follow the correct procedure when playing a provisional ball.

First rule is that when playing a second ball, the golfer must clearly indicate that the ball he/she is about to play is provisional, by saying “this is a provisional ball”. It’s not sufficient to say “[expletive deleted], guess I’d better hit another one” or similar. It’s not up to your playing partners to ask you “Is that a provisional you are about to hit”? If you don’t indicate clearly that you are hitting a provisional, then it becomes your ball in play and your first ball is dead, even if you find it hit a tree and now lies in the middle of the fairway!

Provisional rule basics
If you declare the ball as provisional. If you subsequently find the first ball (and it’s not out of bounds), you HAVE to play the original ball. That’s a nuisance I know, if you have hit your provisional a country mile down the middle of the fairway and your original ball is found in deep doo-doo, but that’s life. Neither can you declare your first ball as “lost”. Although sometimes you might not try too hard to find your first ball in these circumstances, you can’t stop your playing partner/opponent from looking for it!

If you have omitted to declare the ball as provisional (which you may have done by choice). In this case, your second ball is the ball in play whether you like it or not. If you find your original ball, whether on the fairway or deep rough, you can retrieve it, but continue playing the second ball.

And then finally, there is the American playing golf in Scotland for the first time. After hitting his tee shot off the first out-of-bounds, he asks his local caddie, “Do you have Mulligans in Scotland”?  The caddie replies “Aye, we do sir – but here we call them 3’s”!

Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!

Abridge Golf Lady Captains Blog Stardate 21st December 2018

Well another year is almost over. I have just got used to writing 2018 and now its nearly 2019! We have had a fun filled action packed year at Abridge Ladies Section.

December has been a very busy month for Ladies Golf at Abridge. We stated with the Menorah cup to celebrate Chanukah. In  a very  closely run foursomes golf competition, the winners were Carol Gray and Carole Piper on a countback from Deborah Jacobs and Melanie Schlosberg. We were all treated to festive donuts.

Carol & Carole Menorah Cup Winners

Our fun Putting Princess competition was won by Mandi Barker and Deborah Jacobs and our monthly stableford golf competition was also won by Mandi, who played exceptionally well despite the winter conditions.

Even though it is very wet out at the moment our new Buggy Paths on the front nine at Abridge Golf Club have made sure that everyone has been able to play whatever the weather.

This week we ended the year with a fun filled Christmas themed fun competition and a prize for the best dressed trolley. My thanks to all the ladies who took the trouble to participate, and to our professional Jack Winer for judging the competition.

The Ladies set off to play

Everyone eagerly awaited his judgement and the winning entry went to Alison Levy who won a festive bottle of bubbly. However with the help of the Christmas Fairy all of our golfing ladies were winners resulting in a small gift for all who participated. This was followed by lunch with crackers and chocolate father Christmases and of course mince pies!

We have enjoyed some really great golf, some fun and great camaraderie. Abridge golfing ladies really know how to enjoy themselves and love playing golf.

We have some very exciting competitions planned for the New Year so we just have to hope that the weather continues to be kind to us.

Wishing everyone Happy Holidays and a great New Year.

Lots of Love

Fantastic new buggy paths

Dear Lol

Re: Buggy Paths

I congratulate Jeff and his team and yourself on the fine and quick installation of the paths.  I can see multi benefits of having them.  I out-line my views as follows: –

1.    The Course will benefit greatly by reducing Wear and Tear especially during the Winter months.

2.    Buggies can be used twelve months of the year.  At the moment, any Buggy user can play the front line twice providing they get a second start time.

3.    The current 10 club Buggies can be used 12 months of the year instead of being laid up from November to March, therefor not generating any income to pay their rental charges

4.    In due course Abridge will develop its standing to a club that can be played all the year round for Buggies and Electronic Trolleys and even Walkers in a comfortable environment (no wet feet or trousers)

5.    From my own experience I have not found it any hardship to walk and play the 90º rule, play is no longer than normal. 4 Ball Times.

Finally, I would urge you to proceed with the back Nine as a matter of urgency so that we can all benefit from the Points outlined.

Once again well done, everyone keep up the good work.

Best Regards

Alan Hopson
